    Dave Sharphorn was Grand Valley State University's first athletic coach. He established the basketball program, beginning on the J.V. level in 1964-65 and varsity in 1966-67. He coached the Lakers through the 1971-72 season before turning the reigns over to Tom Villemure. Dave introduced tennis in the spring of 1965 and coached until the 1974 season. He started the cross country program in the fall of 1965.
    During his tenure at Grand Valley, Dave served in many capacities. Along with coaching, he was a faculty member, Director of Recreation Programs, Director of College Relations and Director of State Relations.
    Dave is also well-known in the Grand Rapids area for his outstanding basketball teams at Central High School. His 1959-60 team was City League Champions and made the state semi-finals. He is a graduate of Traverse City High School and Western Michigan University.
    Dave lives in Shelby with his wife, Jane. They have three daughters, Linda, Susan, Kim and six grandchildren.
