    Gary Evans became Grand Valley's first NFL player when he joined the New York Jets in 1978. He remained with the Jets in 1979 and played with the Cleveland Browns in 1980.
    Evans was a three-year starter for the Lakers as well as captain of the first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship team in 1977.
    He was also the first Grand Valley State offensive tackle to be named to the All-Great Lakes Conference team, in 1977, and was selected to the NAIA District 23 and NAIA All-America first team during his career as well. 
    A graduate of Bay City All-Saints High School, Evans has been instrumental in helping other Laker football players adjust to the pro ranks and has been active with the GVSU Football Alumni.
