Paul Peterman was a Muskegon native who attended GVSC from 1973-77. At the end of his college career, he became the first GVSC basketball player named to an All American First Team. He held eight Grand Valley individual and career scoring records. He was the second leading scorer in GVSC history, with 2,301 points, and third in rebounding, with 894. He was named All Great Lakes Conference three times.
During the three years that Peterman was a starter, GVSC had a 66-25 mark. Whatever success he had, he felt the team success was more important. During the 1976-77 season, the Lakers chalked up 30 victories and fourth place finish in the NAIA tournament. No Michigan college team before or since has even won that many games in a season. Paul Peterman died on November 19, 1985.
