Joan Boand was truly a leader in coaching, teaching and the administration of women’s athletics. Widely known for her coaching success, Boand held GVSU head coaching positions in basketball, volleyball, softball and track & field. She amassed more than 700 total wins, and her GVSU teams won 10 GLIAC Championships during her coaching career. Joan logged a 557-330 (.628) record as the head volleyball coach with five straight GLIAC championships (1973-77) and six overall. She blazed a trail in women’s basketball, leading the Lakers to a 132-48 (.733) record and four straight GLIAC titles (1974-77). As an advocate for women’s athletics, Joan served on countless conference, regional and national NCAA committees in a various capacities for over 25 years. Boand also served as Grand Valley State’s Associate Athletic Director and was instrumental in GVSU being selected to host the NCAA DII/III Women’s Golf National Championships.
