Darva Cheyne was named Charles H. Irwin Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 1979. she posted a career batting average of .343 while playing second base in softball. Cheyne became the first woman athlete to win 12 varsity awards at Grand Valley and played on teams which won 261 games and lost only 100. She played on 11 of 12 Great Lakes Conference championship teams from 1975-79. Cheyne also maintained a 3.33 grade point average in physical education. A native of Wyoming and graduate from Wyoming Park High School.
