Scott Mackey will go down as one of Grand Valley State’s top two-sport athletes of all-time, turning in outstanding careers in both football and track. On the gridiron, Mackey was a consensus two-time First-Team All-American in 2002 and 2003, as well as a three-time All-GLIAC performer and the 2002 GLIAC Defensive Back of the Year. Mackey is the Lakers’ all-time leader in interceptions with 19, interception return yards with 259 and interception returns for touchdowns with five. In addition, Mackey tallied 259 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, 20 pass deflections, three fumble recoveries and 705 punt return yards. Mackey guided GVSU to back-to-back National Championships in 2002 and 2003, three consecutive title game appearances (2001-02-03), two GLIAC Championships and a 41-2 record his final three seasons. On the track, Mackey was a five-time GLIAC indoor and outdoor Champion in the 55, 100 and 200-meter runs. A four-year letterwinner, Mackey ranks among the top 10 all-time for GVSU in GLIAC Championship points scored in both indoor (54) and outdoor (42) track.
