Steph Kuhlman became the benchmark for the Grand Valley State women's track & field program when head coach Jerry Baltes began to build his powerhouse program. Kuhlman won the 2003 Individual National Championship in the 800 meter run at the NCAA DII Outdoor National Championships, becoming just the second-ever women's individual national champion in Laker track & field history. Her indoor time of 2:05.75 is still an NCAA DII Indoor Championship meet and GVSU record that she established the semi's in 2003. Steph was a six-time NCAA DII All-American during her four-year career (4 indoor/2 outdoor) and established three GLIAC championship meet records that still stand. She ran a 2:07.00 at the 2003 GLIAC Indoor Championships in the 800, while clicking a 2:06.57 in the 800 at the 2003 GLIAC Outdoor Championships and a 4:29.37 in the 1,500 at the 2004 GLIAC Outdoor Championships. Kuhlman was a part of a GVSU women's track & field program that won every GLIAC Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championship (8) in which they competed.
