Chuck Irwin was Grand Valley's first athletic director and a member of the physical education staff from 1963-74. He laid the foundation for the athletic program. Irwin believed that a physical education program should provide an opportunity to build physical strength and strength of character as part of a comprehensive college education.
His coaching philosophy stressed the importance of learning. "You try your best. You do your best with what you have. You should never put the whole emphasis on winning. Athletics should be a learning experience...not an exploitation of the players or the public." Chuck Irwin passed away in August, 1983.
