The Grand Valley State women’s track team turned the corner in 2001 as one of the top programs in the country. At the forefront of that excellence was a sprinter from St. Kitts, West Indies, Icis Charles. Icis became a dominant performer for the Lakers not only at the conference level, but the NCAA DII National level. Charles was a six-time All-GLIAC?honoree and earned six NCAA DII All-American honors for GVSU while competing in the 60 and 100-meter dashes, and the long jump. Charles ranks third all-time at GVSU in GLIAC Indoor Championship meet points scored with 64, while her total of 44 points at the GLIAC?Outdoor Championships is 11th in Laker annals. Icis ranks eighth all-time in GVSU indoor track history in NCAA DII Indoor Championship points scored with 19. She finished fifth in the long jump (19-1.25) in 2001 and earned two All-America honors at the 2002 Indoor Championships when she finished fifth in both the long jump (19-0) and 60-meter dash (7.59). Charles finished eighth in the 100-meter dash at the 2002 Outdoor Championships (11.79), followed by two additional All-America honors at the 2003 Indoor Championships with a third-place finish in the 60 (7.50) and a fourth-place finish in the long jump (18-11.75).
