    Dr. George MacDonald was Grand Valley's athletic director from 1976-1989 and chairman of the Physical Education and Therapeutic Recreation Departments since 1973.
    MacDonald was instrumental in the planning, construction and renovation of many of the present athletic facilities including Arend D. Lubbers Stadium and the Fieldhouse which gave GVSU one of the finest Division II sports complexes in the Mid-West. Under his direction, Laker teams won 29 Great Lakes Conference championships and captured the President's Cup twice.
    MacDonalds coaching career began in Perrysburg, Ohio in 1954. He coached basketball, baseball and cross country at Pewamo High School before moving to Flint Atherton where he was football, basketball, track and cross country coach. MacDonald joined the college ranks as a basketball coach at Soo Tech., (Lake Superior State) and Buffalo State.
