Bob Mitchell concluded his career as the most prolific pass catching tight end in Grand Valley State football history and he did it at a time when the Lakers were primarily a running team. Mitchell, who hauled in 120 passes for 1,826 yards and 14 touchdowns in his career, remains the all-time leader in all three categories for the Lakers. He was a three-time Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference performer, including a two-time, First-Team honoree. Mitchell led the Lakers in receptions three times during his career, receiving yards twice and touchdown receptions twice. He set a freshman record for receptions (35) and receiving yards (456) by a tight end in 1988. Mitchell led the squad in receptions (48), receiving yards (735) and touchdowns (7) as a sophomore. Mitchell caught two passes for 28 yards and a TD in the opener of his junior campaign, but was injured and missed the remainder of the season. He earned All-America honors as a senior, hauling in 35 receptions for 607 yards and five TDs, all team highs.
