Grand Valley State University Athletics

    Jim Harkema coached football at Grand Valley from 1973-82. He took over a program that in two previous years had never won a football game and led the Lakers to a 69-29-1 record and three GLIAC championships. His 1978 team posted a 9-3 record before losing out in the semi-finals of the NAIA playoffs. He produced four players who went on to play in the NFL. Harkema was an outstanding athlete at Owosso High School and Kalamazoo College where he quarterbacked the 1962 undefeated team.
