CHAMPIONS! Lakers sweep GLIAC Outdoor Championships for third consecutive season

Women take the crown with 248 points, men collect whopping 300.50 points

CALEDONIA, Mich. – The Grand Valley State men's and women's track and field teams captured the GLIAC Outdoor Championship Title for the third consecutive season.  The women now hone a perfect 21 titles since the start of the century with 248 points scored this week, while the men earned their 14th title since 2001 collecting 300.50 points. 
 
Following three individual titles on Thursday, the women entered the final day of championships with a score of 60 points.  Friday's action saw the women collect an additional seven first-place marks and a handful of other podium finishes. 
  In the fast lane, Angelica Floyd (11.91) and Ashley Perryman (11.94) punched a 1-2 finish in the 100m, while Perryman (24.37) and Marcedes Chandler (25.63) earned the second and fifth places, respectively.  Senior Nicole Sreenan entered double digits for individual titles, earning her 10th GLIAC title in the 400m with a finish of 54.77 seconds.  Jessica Eby collected the silver medal in the 400H with a time of 1:00.15.  Both relay teams posted a runner-up finish, as the 4x100m relay team clocked in at 46.14 seconds and the 4x400m relay team finished in 3:49.76. 
 
Allie Ludge finished her GLIAC career with a title in the 1,500m, crossing the line in 4:36.42.  Behind her and scoring for the Lakers was Klaudia O'Malley (2nd; 4:37.94) and Sarah May (4th; 4:44.20).  After capturing the indoor 800m title, freshman Taryn Chapko did not miss a beat and claimed the outdoor title in 2:09.97.  In the 5,000m, Jessica Gockley (17:03.47) and Lynsey Amthor (17:15.41) punched a 1-2 finish with Emma Evert-Deckard (17:55.17) to round out the race scoring. 
 
Senior Elli Kimes kept her GLIAC Championships record perfect, earning her seventh gold medal with a 4.05m clear, as did Carly Livingston who collected the silver.  Sophomore Emma Richards threw the discus 50.25m, more than five meters ahead of the runner-up, while Elizabeth Pyles collected the bronze with a 44.43 mark.  Also scoring for the Lakers was Jenna Doyle (4th; 1.63m) in the high jump, and Erika Lechner (2nd; 14.19m) and Richards (5th; 13.73m). 
 
The men earned six first-place titles on Friday, with three apiece coming in the field and on the track.  Jackson Blanchard earned a pair of runner-up finishes in the 110H (14.32) and 400H (51.28), while Tyler Kirkwood (4th; 14.78) and Daniel Walker (3rd; 51.29) scored alongside him the two events.  In the 200m, Calvin Hatcher (21.64) and Antonio Passarelli (21.88) took the fourth and sixth spots, respectively, while Jaylen Hasan (49.05), Myles Rhodes (49.32) and Brendan Faulkner (49.99) punched a 3-4-6 finish.  Similar to the women, both men's relay squads posted a second-place finish with the 4x100m crossing the line in 41.14 seconds and the 4x400m team finishing the race in 3:12.30. 
 
Isaac Harding clocked in a first-place time of 3:49.37 in the 1,500m with Tanner Chada (3:51.05) and Brendan Parr (3:54.66) scoring in places four and five.  The men posted a clean podium sweep in the 800m as Dennis Mbuta (1:50.20), Scott Spaanstra (1:50.94) and John Groendyk (1:51.18) added 24 points to the board within less than a second.  The 5,000m proved to pad the scoreboard as well, as Enael Woldemichael (1st; 14:37.27), Marcos Garcia (4th; 14:39.89), Andrew Hylen (5th; 14:42.25) and Colin Herrmann (6th; 14:42.57) posted 22 points. 
 
Justin Scavarda (discus throw; 54.33m), Mac Mitchell (triple jump; 13.88m) and Jacob Battani (pole vault; 5.02m) each swept their respective events.  Also scoring in the discus were Myles Kerner (6th; 49.84m) and Tommy Cwiok (8th; 47.09m), while James Nutt collected a second-place clear of 4.97m in the pole vault.  Kerner (3rd; 17.74m) and Scavarda (4th; 17.59m) scored again in the shot put, along with junior Brad Warman (7th; 16.15m). 
 
The Lakers hit the road for one final shot at qualifications next weekend before acting as the hosts for the NCAA Division II Outdoor National Championships (May 27-29).  The Championships last came to Allendale in back-to-back seasons in 2014 and 2015.
