Grand Valley State to Host 2026 GLIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships

ALLENDALE, Mich. – Grand Valley State University is set to host the 2026 GLIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships beginning this Wednesday, April 29 through Friday, May 1. The three-day competition takes place at the GVSU Track and Field/Lacrosse Stadium.

The 2026 GLIAC Outdoor Championships begin Wednesday as five men and 12 women compete in multi events – the decathlon for men and heptathlon for women. No GVSU student-athletes will compete. Heptathlon events will begin at 1:30 p.m. and continue through approximately 5 p.m. while the men's multis begin the day at 2 p.m. and are expected to conclude around 7 p.m.
 
Thursday begins with multi events, as well. The men's decathlon spans from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the women shall compete from 9:30 a.m. through noon.
 
Following the conclusion of multis, individual track and field events take center stage. Women will compete first, followed by the men in all events. The 1500m prelim, beginning at 2:15 p.m., precedes the 100/110m hurdles, 400m, 100m, 800m, 400m hurdle and 200m preliminary events. Finals events begin at approximately 6:10 p.m. as the 3000m steeplechase and 10000m close out day two on the track.
 
Men's hammer throw, men's long jump and men's pole vault marks the start of field events at 2:30 p.m. Women's javelin follows at 3 p.m. and women's hammer is slated for 4:30 p.m. Men's high jump and javelin begin at 5 and women's long jump closes out the day's field events at 5:30 p.m.
 
Championship Friday begins at 10 a.m. with field events, followed by running events at 11:10 a.m. Men's shot put and triple jump, and women's discus and high jump begin at 10 a.m. Women's shot put, triple jump and pole vault and men's discus follow at noon.
 
The 4x100m relay begins track events at 11:10 a.m., followed by the finals rounds of the preliminary events from the day prior. Those advancing will compete in their respective event from 11:25 p.m. through 1:05 p.m.
 
At 1:10, athletes take the track to race in four heats, two women's ahead of two men's, of the 5000m. The final events of the day, the 4x400m relays, are expected to begin at 2:30 p.m.
 
Following the conclusion of all events, team champions will be crowned and individual award winners will be announced. 
 
Ranked No. 1 and No. 3 in NCAA Division II, Grand Valley State's men's and women's track and field teams are expected to earn both team titles this weekend. The men lead Saginaw Valley State (No. 2 GLIAC, No. 21 NCAA DII) and UW-Parkside (No. 3 GLIAC, No. 53 NCAA DII) while the women rank first ahead of UW-Parkside (No. 2 GLIAC, No. 57 NCAA DII) and Wayne State (No. 3 GLIAC, No. 93 NCAA DII).
 
GVSU's men are looking to add their eighth consecutive GLIAC Outdoor title to their trophy case, which would be their 19th total earned during the outdoor season. The women are expected to add their 26th consecutive and overall title to the list.
 
68 Lakers will compete in 36 events across the three-day span; however, competition for GVSU will begin Thursday as no Lakers will compete in heptathlon or decathlon events. A list of Lakers competing may be found here.
