Lakers lead GLIAC Indoor Championships after Day 1

Women collected 69 points; men earned 77 points

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Grand Valley State men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up the first day of action at the GLIAC Indoor Championships on Saturday (Feb. 27).  The women stand in first place with 69 points while the men hold the top spot with 58 points.
 
Corrina Courser advanced to the 60H finals with a time of 8.80 seconds in the preliminary round, while Angelica Floyd (7.57), Marcedes Chandler (7.67) and Ashley Perryman (7.74) earned spots in Sunday's 60m finals.  In the 200m, Nicole Sreenan (24.04), Marcedes Chandler (24.93) and Angelica Floyd (25.23) claimed the top three times in the preliminary rounds to earn spots in the finals, while Jessica Eby (56.81) and Abbey Clasen (59.71) will compete in tomorrow's 400m finals.
 
The Laker women punched a 5,000m sweep with Kayce Rypma (16:57.54), Lynsey Amthor (16:59.91) Lilah Parker (17:08.54) and Natalie Graber (17:12.46) posting a 1-2-3-4 finish.  The women's distance medley relay comprised of Olivia Brian, Clasen, Hannah Roeske and Sarah May collected the silver medal with an 11:45.79 mark.
 
Junior Judith Essemiah dominated the weight throw competition with a personal best mark of 19.99m.  Also scoring for the Lakers was Franesha Robinson-Mitchell (6th; 17.15m) and Alaina Omonode (8th; 16.59m).  Floyd (2nd; 5.61m) and Perryman (8th; 5.18) earned scoring leaps in the long jump.  Freshmen Lindsey Strutz (3336) and Chloe Norman (2992) finished third and sixth, respectively, in the pentathlon. 
 
Makiyah Smallwood and Jackson Blanchard earned spots in the 60H finals with finishes of 8.06 and 8.13 seconds, respectively.  Jalen Kyles (6.88; 21.73) and Antonio Passarelli (7.00; 22.18) will compete in Sunday's 60m and 200m sprints.  Representing GVSU in the 400m finals is Blanchard (48.97), Jaylen Hasan (49.59) and Myles Rhodes (49.70).    
 
Freshman Andrew Hylen picked up a personal best and gold medal in the 5,000m with a clocked finish of 14:16.82, while Enael Woldemichael (2nd; 14:19.94) and Marcos Garcia (5th; 14:39.96) also scored for the Lakers.  Tanner Chada, Brenden Faulkner, John Groendyk and Isaac Harding swept the distance medley relay field with a 9:46.14 finish. 
 
Senior Marcus Lubbers was crowned the pole vault champion with a 4.55m clear while Chanse Setzke hit a personal best in the long jump with a 6.89m hop, good for second place.  In the weight throw, Justin Scavarda (20.14m), Hunter Harding (19.26m) and Leon White (19.15m) hit a 2-3-4 finish. 
 
The GLIAC Indoor Championships conclude on Sunday, Feb. 28 with final action from the men's heptathlon beginning at 9 a.m.
