2016-17 Top-10: Swimming & Diving Caps Strong Season With Two Individual National Titles

Men and Women Both Win GLIAC Championship Title

The annual countdown of the top-10 moments in Laker sports for the past athletic year has started.  2016-17 was another productive year for the Lakers as GVSU Athletics claimed its 12th Directors' Cup and 19th consecutive GLIAC Presidents' Trophy. Over the next few weeks, stories will be released every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on gvsulakers.com counting down the biggest accomplishments by Grand Valley State teams, as well as individual athletes, during the 2016-17 campaign.

No. 4: Swimming & Diving Caps Strong Season With Two Individual National Titles


Senior Leonie Van Noort captured her third Individual National Title during the 2017 NCAA Championships in Birmingham, Alabama when she took first in the 500-yard freestyle in a school record time of 4:46.62. Van Noort also won National Championships in the 200-yard freestyle and 1,650-yard freestyle during the 2016 NCAA Championships. The Leiden, Netherlands native holds school records in the 100, 200, 500, 1,000, and 1,500-yard solo freestyle events. Van Noort was also part of the school record-holding 400 and 800-yard freestyle relay teams as well as the 400-yard medley relay team.

Sophomore diver Brad Dalrymple won his second career national championship after he scored 513.70 in the 3-meter dive on day one of the 2017 National Championship Meet. During the 2016 National Meet, Dalrymple placed first in the 1-meter dive with a score of 540.45. The Saint Joseph, Mich. product currently hold the school record in the 3-meter (6) dive. 

For the first time in school history, the GVSU men's and women's team swept the GLIAC Championship meet. The Laker men finished the meet with a four-day total of 947.5 points while Wayne State finished in second with 769 points. The women earned a four-day total of 812 points to push them ahead of second place Wayne State who finished with 787.5 points. This is the third consecutive GLIAC Championship for the men and sixth overall while the women claimed their second championship in school history.
