The annual countdown of the top-10 moments in Laker sports for the past athletic year has started. 2016-17 was another productive year for the Lakers as GVSU Athletics claimed its 12th Directors' Cup and 19th consecutive GLIAC Presidents' Trophy. Over the next few weeks, stories will be released every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on gvsulakers.com counting down the biggest accomplishments by Grand Valley State teams, as well as individual athletes, during the 2016-17 campaign.
2016-17 Top-10 GVSU Moments
No. 10: Men's Golf Claims GLIAC Championship Title
NASHPORT, Ohio-- The Grand Valley State men's golf team shot a 297 in the final round of the GLIAC Golf Championship on Sunday on the way to claiming the title with a total score of 890 (+9), eleven strokes ahead of second-place Ferris State. The title is the seventh in program history for Grand Valley State, and marks the first GLIAC title for GVSU since the 2012-13 season.
"The guys worked so hard for this and I am very proud of their progress", said GVSU head coach
Gary Bissell. "This is a great event to get us ready for the upcoming super regional."
Bryce Messner finished tied for second at the event to lead the team, carding a 74 in each round to finish at 222 overall. Just behind him in a tie for fouth was
Domenic Mancinelli, who finished the tournament at 75-72-76-223. Dropping his scores in each round and ending up tied for sixth was
Alex Scott, who shot 79-74-71-224, while
Owen Rush tied for 15th with a 73-78-76-227.
Alex Nannetti ended the event in 19th to round out the Laker lineup, as he carded a 77-74-77-228.
Mancinelli and Nannetti each had an eagle, while Mancinelli added 11 birdies. Messner and Scott each finished with nine birdies, Rush had eight and Nannetti finished with seven.
Tiffin (904), SVSU (914) and Findlay (922) rounded out the top five team finishers.
