GVSU adds program-bests in annual Al Owens Classic

Lakers return to road action next weekend

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Grand Valley State track and field teams concluded action in the Al Owens Classic on Saturday, the first home outdoor meet since the 2019 season.  Similar to the trend set this season, a handful of qualifications and program all-time top marks were met. 
 
Nicole Sreenan (12.00) and Angelica Floyd (12.03) showed their strengths in the 100m, finishing neck-and-neck at the top of the leaderboard.  The Laker seniors joined Ashley Perryman and Marcedes Chandler in the 4x100m relay to earn a first-place finish in 46.04, good for a provisional qualification and the No. 5 spot in school history.  Floyd (25.09) and Perryman (25.20) finished the day with a 1-2 finish in the 200m.  Jessica Eby swept the 400H competition with a provisional finish of 1:00.40. 
 
In the 1,500m, Michelle Koetje (4:38.57) and Sarah May (4:40.67) finished in the fifth and eighth spots, respectively.  Freshman Taryn Chapko collected a third-place mark of 58.11 seconds in the 400m, while Cameron Cleveland clocked a time of 2:17.94 in the 800m. 
 
In the field, a handful of top-three finishes were met, including Judith Essemiah sweeping the field in the javelin with a distance of 61.63m.  Senior Elli Kimes met an automatic clear of 4.21m, marking the program's second-best height.  Emma Richards finished third in the discus (46.42m) and fifth in the shot put (13.43m), while Erika Lechner took fourth with a 13.52m mark. 
 
The men's 4x100m relay team of Makiyah Smallwood, Calvin Hatcher, Antonio Passarelli and Jalen Kyles hit a first-place time of 41.00, just .14 seconds off of their record-breaking time posted last weekend.  Kyles collected a second-place finish in the 100m with a time of 10.82 seconds, while Jaylen Hasan (48.74) finished third in the 400m.  Jackson Blanchard (14.34) and Smallwood (14.67) finished first and second, respectively, in the 100H, while Alexander Porter claimed the 400H runner-up spot with a finish of 54.26 seconds. 
 
Hunter Harding swept the hammer throw field with a provisional mark of 61.88m, while Justin Scavarda earned automatic marks and personal bests in the shot put (18.57m) and discus throw (56.54m).  Cameron Graziosi finished as the high jump runner-up with a 1.93m clear, while Marcus Lubbers and James Nutt tied for third in the pole vault with a clear of 4.56m.  Mac Mitchell hit a PR in the triple jump with a leap of 14.06m, good for second place.

In Friday night's 3,000m Steeplechase action, Caleb Futter and Connor Schwartz rewrote the GVSU record book with new top-two times, more than four seconds ahead of the original record set in 2010.  Futter finished with a time of 8:51.30, with Schwartz crossing the line just over a second after him (8:52.32). 
 
GVSU returns to action next weekend in the Gina Relays, Ball State Challenge and Knight Invite.
