Lakers break two records in weekend road action

The Grand Valley State men's and women's track and field teams concluded road action this weekend at Bellarmine and Hillsdale, coming back to Allendale with multiple new program records.

The distance squads competed in Louisville on Friday night and met multiple NCAA DII provisional qualifications and first-place finishes.  Enael Woldemichael claimed the program's No. 4 spot in the 10,000m (29:12.99) while Connor Schwartz landed at the eighth-best program finish in the 3,000m steeplechase (9:05.08).  Andrew Hylen, (30:05.77), Marcos Garcia (30:08.89) and Colin Herrmann (30:29.02) earned provisional finishes in the 10,000m as well.  Natalie Graber (1,5000m; 4:35.57) and Kayce Rypma (3,000S; 10:52.15) collected first place finishes in their respective events while Emma Everhart-Deckard finished runner-up in the 5,000m with a time of 18:08.06.
 
Hillsdale Invitational

After breaking the indoor record earlier this season, freshman Lindsey Strutz rewrote the outdoor heptathlon record with a provisional finish of 4797 points.  Freshman Marcedes Chandler swept the 100m competition with a time of 11.99 seconds while Analis Floyd posted a 26.06 finish in the 200m. 
 
Judith Essemiah defeated the hammer throw field with a mark of 62.00m while Franesha Robinson-Mitchell took third with a distance of 48.60m.  In the pole vault, Elli Kimes (4.00m) and Kassidie Stimmel (3.85m) punched a 2-3 finish. 
 
The men's 4x100m relay team comprised of Makiyah Smallwood, Calvin Hatcher, Antonio Passarelli and Jalen Kyles broke the school record with a provisional time of 40.86 seconds.  Smallwood earned a second provisional qualification in the 110H after crossing the finish line in 14.19 seconds. 
 
Hunter Harding posted the program's second-best hammer throw mark with a 63.86m finish.  Senior Justin Scavarda (17.29m) and freshman Myles Kerner (17.08m) finished in the first and second spots, respectively, in the shot put, while Marcus Lubbers collected the bronze in the pole vault with a 4.47m clear. 
 
GVSU opens home outdoor action next weekend in the annual Al Owens Invite (April 16-17).
