ORLANDO, Fla. - The #46 ranked Grand Valley State women's tennis team went 1-1 on Monday (3/6) to move to 12-3 on the season. The Laker's won their first matchup of the day against the Knights of Marian University by a score of 9-0 before being downed by Furman University 7-0.
The Laker's started their Spring Trip off by downing Marian University by a score of 9-0. Leading the way in doubles competition was the duo of
Aimee Moccia and
Alexa Sweeney out of the No. 1 spot. The pair was able to down the tandem of Maria Angela Sunga and Grace Neathery, 8-2. Following in their footsteps was the pair of
Abby Perkins and
Livia Christman who won their matchup 8-3 against Maria Lueken and Mary Mullaney in the No. 2 spot. Rounding out doubles competition was
Calla Ramont and
Katarina Samardzija who rounded out the sweep with their 8-4 victory over the Knights.
Singles competition went much the same way as doubles, with GVSU winning all of the matches. Leading the way in the No. 1 spot was
Madison Ballard who won 6-3, 6-1 against her opponent. Out of the No. 2 spot was Sweeney, who downed Neathery by a score of 6-1, 6-2. The other Laker's winning their singles matches were Moccia (6-2, 3-6, 6-0),
Nicole Heiniger (6-1, 3-6, 5-4 (retired)), Sam Schrepferman (7-5, 6-3), and Ramont (6-4, 6-2).
The Laker's dropped their second match of the day to Division I Furman University. The Paladins were able to sweep Grand Valley by a score of 7-0. Putting up a hard fought battle was Schrepferman as she was downed 6-4, 6-3 by Anna Walter. On the doubles side, the duo of Schrepferman and Samardzija put up a good fight but eventually fell 6-3 to the opposing Paladins.
The Laker's will be back in action tomorrow (3/7) as they face off against Mount St. Mary's and Minnesota State-Mankato.
