Lakers Narrowly Fall to Detroit Mercy

GVSU suffers 4-3 defeat

The Grand Valley State women's tennis team traveled to Detroit to take on Detroit Mercy on Sunday in what would turn out to be a highly contested match that Detroit would win 4-3. The Laker women were able to get off to a hot start on the day in doubles play, taking the doubles point against Detroit, but would go on to win just two singles matches as Detroit bested the Lakers.

In doubles play, the Lakers took wins in the number two and number three positions as the duo of Aimee Moccia and Alexa Sweeney took home a 6-4 victory over Anna Davydova and Nynke Van Der Goot. The number three pairing of Abby Perkins and Livia Christman defeated Detroit's Sara Mitrakovic and Ksenia Providokhina by a score of 6-2.

In singles play, the Lakers were able to grab wins in the number two and number three positions and Sweeney defeated Marie Maitrot at number two singles 7-5, 6-4. Moccia would take the other win for the Lakers at number three singles with a 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-3 victory over Iris Thioux.

The Lakers continue the spring portion of their schedule on Thursday when they take on Bellarmine at 3:00 PM in Louisville, Ky.
