DELAND, Fla. - Grand Valley State women's tennis wrapped up their Spring Break trip to Florida with a 6-1 loss to Stetson of Division I on Saturday afternoon. The Lakers, ranked 39th in the latest ITA Division II poll, see their record at 16-6 with today's loss, while the Hatters improved to 8-1 after the win. The loss also puts GVSU's record on the Spring Break trip at an even 3-3.
With Stetson sweeping doubles play and winning five of the six singles matches,
Carola Orna earned the only Laker point on the day with a victory from the No. 3 position. The senior won the first set, 7-5, before dropping the second, 2-6. Forced into the all-important tie-breaker, Orna emerged victorious after a tight 10-8 decision, pushing her singles record to 19-3 and 15-2 in dual meets in 2014-15.
Kali Phillips was the only other GVSU player to come close to a victory from the No. 2 position, pushing her opponent into a tiebreaker set before being defeated (7-5, 6-7, 7-5).
Grand Valley State begins another road trip shortly after returning from Florida, taking on a pair of opponents in Missouri. The Lakers will first take on Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday (Mar. 14) before facing Lindenwood the next day (Mar. 15).
