GRAND RAPIDS – Grand Valley State concluded their participation in the 2014 USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championship this afternoon, taking home three draws on the final day.
In the Singles "A" Consolation bracket,
Carola Orna faced stiff competition in Ohio Dominican's Ana Pico, with the match lasting three long sets. But the GVSU senior came out on top (2-6, 6-4, 14-12) to take home the championship.
Three Lakers remained alive in the Singles "B" Championship draw, with
Aimee Moccia and
Morgan Patterson going toe-to-toe and
Courtney Lang taking on Lauren Sharp of Saginaw Valley. It would turn out to be an all-Laker affair in the final, with Patterson and Lang squaring off, and Lang taking the crown in three sets (6-2, 4-6, 10-1). In Singles "B" Consolation action,
Kristina Lucas fell in three sets in the Semifinal (6-4, 3-6, 10-8) to University of Indianapolis' Dana Olsen.
Overall, GVSU went 11-5 in Singles "A", 5-2 in Doubles "A", 17-5 in Singles "B", and 8-2 in Doubles "B" in three days of action. The Lakers have a busy upcoming weekend. In a triple split-squad scheduling, one third of the team will participate in the Wisconsin-Whitewater Invitational, while another third will face GLIAC rival Tiffin, and a final third will head to Findlay.
