GVSU Swim & Dive Dominate The First Day Of The GVSU Invite

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Grand Valley State men's and women's swim and dive teams had a strong first day as they dominated at the Holland Aquatic Center in their season-opening meet.

On the men's side, the Lakers were dominant against McKendree and Hope on day one of the GVSU Invite.

Scores for the Lakers:

Raul Briceno finished first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:29.85. Mason Crews, making his debut, took second place with a time of 4:32.69. Anton Rauch placed third for the Lakers, and Luis Ojeda Bosch finished fifth.

In the 50-yard freestyle, Evan Scotto DiVetta touched the wall first with a time of 19.75. His teammates Mahmoud Abdelkarim (second), Carsyn Christoffel (third), Ali Usama (fourth), Thomas Ferguson and Andrew Goh (fifth), and Jack Hester (seventh) all finished in the top 10.

In the 200 individual medley, Jan Matejczuk placed second with a time of 1:48.38, and Matti Gaebler took third with a time of 1:52.91.

The men's 200 freestyle relay team of Usama, Abdelkarim, Matejczuk, and Scotto DiVetta touched the wall first with a time of 1:19.80, finishing ahead.Three additional GVSU relay teams followed close behind.

In the 400 medley relay, the Lakers claimed first place with a time of 3:15.02. The relay team included Matejczuk, Goh, Ferguson, and Scotto DiVetta. The remaining GVSU relay teams placed second, third, and fourth.

In men's diving, Carter Wood scored a 291.38 in the 1-meter dive to place first. Max Schwickert scored 253.58 to take second, and Austin Clise placed third.

On the women's side, the Lakers lead both McKendree and Hope after the first day of competition.

In the 50-yard freestyle, Lucy Hedley touched the wall first with a time of 23.06. Avery Rottier took second (23.48), while Samara Zeinert finished fifth and Ana Villamil sixth.

Katie O'Connell won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:00.54, followed by Linda Frick in second with a time of 5:07.02.

In the 200 individual medley, GVSU had five swimmers finish in the top eight. Sara Alvarez placed first with a time of 2:05.67, and Vittoria Proietti took third with a time of 2:06.92.

To start the meet, Hedley, Rottier, Zeinert, and Villamil broke a school record in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:32.91. Two other GVSU relay teams finished third and fourth.

The relay team of Proietti, Alvarez, Kelly Shortall, and Hedley won the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:47.76. Two additional GVSU relay teams finished second and fourth.

In women's diving, Olivia Kutsche scored a 240.23 in the 1-meter dive to place first. Samantha Plough scored 239.70 to finish second, and Emi Goto placed third.

The Lakers will continue competition Saturday with the second and third sessions of the GVSU Invite at the Holland Aquatic Center. The second session begins at 10:45 a.m., followed by the third session at 2:45 p.m.
