Volleyball To Travel To Wayne State and SVSU

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The Grand Valley State women's volleyball team continues GLIAC play this weekend with a trip to the east side, as they take on Wayne State tomorrow night followed by a matchup with Saginaw Valley Saturday evening.

The Lakers enter the weekend at 7-1 and 1-1 in conference play following their trip up across the bridge last weekend. GVSU was swept by Michigan Tech but bounced back to defeat Northern Michigan in four sets the following day. Jordyn Gates was named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week after she tallied 30 kills, 37 assists, and 18 digs. She leads the Lakers with 85 kills and is second with 130 assists and 73 digs. This season, GVSU has recorded 61 total blocks, compared to just 34 for their opponents, with Brianna Stawski and Sarah Wight leading the way with over 20 blocks apiece, and they have served 55 aces, led by Kendall Stover and Rachel Jacquay with 12 and 10 respectfully.
 
In the first game of the weekend, the Lakers are in the Motor City for a matchup with Wayne State. The Warriors are 3-7 and 0-2 in conference play, falling to Ferris State in five sets and Purdue Northwest in four. Molly Miller is fourth in the GLIAC with 124 kills and her 3.35 kills per set also rank fourth in the league. Her setter, Kayla Dulgar's 345 assists are second in the conference, while libero Kendyl Andrews is second in the conference in digs with 160. Last season, the Warriors beat the Lakers in both matchups, sweeping the Lakers in Detroit and winning in four sets in Allendale.
 
Closing out the weekend will be a game against the 2-8 Saginaw Valley State Cardinals. GVSU swept the Cardinals last season, winning in three sets on the road, and then winning in four sets at home. The Cardinals also began conference play 0-2, as they fell to Parkside in straight sets and lost to Ferris in five. Junior outside hitter Madison Thompson is the top attacker for the Cardinals, tallying 107 kills this season. SVSU has split setting duties, but freshman Ava Beard leads the team with 202 assists. The Cardinals have the second lowest hitting percentage in the conference, only swinging at a .138 clip and they have a league high 220 attack errors.
