Volleyball Closes Out Regular Season With Two Weekend Matches

The Lakers Will Honor Five Seniors Friday Night As Part Of The Senior Night Festivities

11.03.2022

ALLENDALE, MICH. – It's the last weekend of the regular season for the Grand Valley volleyball team, and the Lakers get set for rematches on both Friday and Saturday. Friday is also Senior Night, and the Lakers will recognize five outstanding seniors before the game against Wayne State at 6pm. On Saturday the Lakers close out the regular season with a matchup against SVSU at 4pm.

Before the Wayne State game on Friday, the Lakers will be recognizing the careers of Savannah Thompson, Karlie Kucharczyk, Camille Hurta, Jaelianna Primus, and Mattie McCabe. Kucharczyk, Hurta, Primus, and McCabe all started their Laker careers in 2019, and have terrific four year careers, while Thompson transferred in this season and has been an integral part of the Grand Valley team this fall.

Grand Valley is currently in sixth place in the GLIAC standings, coming in at 9-7 in conference and 16-11 overall. The Lakers have already clinched their spot in next week's GLIAC tournament, but the seeding has not been finalized. GVSU is coming off a 2-1 week, after defeating Davenport on the road, LSSU at home, and falling on the road at Ferris State. After recording two more triple-doubles last week, Jordyn Gates is now second in the nation with nine, while she also leads the team in kills (271) and digs (338). Rachel Jacquay has handed out a team-leading 568 assists, while Sarah Wight and Jaelianna Primus are tied for the team lead with 67 blocks. The Lakers have the reigning GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week in Mattie McCabe who tallied 16 total blocks last week to earn her first career GLIAC Player of the Week Award.

The weekend starts off with a rematch against Wayne State, a team that swept the Lakers in their meeting in late September. The Warriors are holding on to the four seed in the GLIAC, just a game up on Michigan Tech and GVSU for the final GLIAC Tournament quarterfinal host. WSU went 2-1 last week, sweeping both SVSU and Michigan Tech before getting swept by Northern Michigan on Saturday. Outside hitter Lauren VanderWal is fourth in the conference with 337 kills, and her 3.37 kills per set also rank fourth in the league. Graduate setter Kamryn Duffield is second in the GLIAC with 973 assists, while Maddy Benoit's 523 digs place her second in the league, just eight back of the leader. The Warriors also have the top blocker in the league in Halle Shell, who has recorded 94 total blocks this season, 18 solo and 76 block assists.

Grand Valley closes out the regular season with a match against a reeling Saginaw Valley squad, who has lost 10 of their last 11 matches, including six straight. Last week the Cardinals got swept by both Wayne State and Northern Michigan and also lost in five sets to Michigan Tech. SVSU has two attackers in the GLIAC's top-15 kills leader in Madison Thompson (7th, 311) and Rylee Zimmer (13th, 265). Their setter, Peyton Gerstacker, is fifth in the league with 834 assists, while Kelsey Vittitow's 335 digs places her eighth in the conference, while Zimmer's 317 digs puts her in ninth.
