Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The No. 21 Grand Valley State Lakers split their two games Friday (March 5) on the opening day of the Midwest Region Crossover at Deaconess Sports Park. GVSU fell in the opener, 8-6, to Trevecca Nazarene before a 7-0 win over Kentucky Wesleyan. The Lakers are now 4-1 on the season with three more games to play this weekend.

Nikoma Holmen and Taylor Rieger each had four RBI on the day to lead the Laker attack, each hitting a home run. Lydia Goble also went deep for the Lakers on the afternoon.

The Lakers struck first in game one, scoring on a two-out single from Holmen in the bottom of the first. That seemed to be plenty for Ashley Platek (L, 1-1) in the circle, who retired 10 straight to start the game. But she ran into trouble with a string of singles in the fourth, leading to four Trojan runs.

They'd tack on two more in the fifth before a Taylor Rieger RBI single highlighted a two-run sixth for the Lakers to get back within three. A two-run homer in the visitors' seventh gave the Trojans some needed breathing room as a Holmen two-run homer capped a three-run seventh for the Lakers to get back within two, but the comeback would fall short.

The Lakers jumped on the board early in the second game as well, scoring twice in the first inning on a Rieger double and Holmen sac fly. Rieger would launch a two-run jack in the third and Goble followed suit with a solo shot. The Lakers tacked on three more in the seventh to break the game open on RBI hits by Morgan Wagner, Hannah Hollister and Joanna Cirrincione.

Hannah Beatus (W, 2-0) went the distance for the Lakers in game two, scattering three hits and a walk while striking out nine for the shutout. The Lakers play two more on Saturday (March 6), beginning at 1:00 ET against Lake Erie.
