CROWN POINT, Ind. - The Grand Valley State softball team began postseason play with a 4-2 win over Davenport in the opening round of the GLIAC tournament Thursday (May 7) afternoon in Crown Point, Indiana. The Lakers improve to 28-23 overall on the season and advance in the winner's bracket to face Ferris State.
Davenport scored the opening run of the game in the second inning. The Panthers hit a double to left field followed by a single that scored the runner from second to give Davenport an early 1-0 lead. GVSU would find the equalizer in the bottom of the third inning.
Camryn Hall hit a line drive to center field that got by the Panther center fielder and rolled all the way to the fence. Hall was able to run around the bases for an inside the park home run to tie the game at one. That was Hall's first collegiate home run.Â
GVSU would take their first lead of the game in the fourth inning.
MaryJane Goodman led the inning with a walk. Two batters later,
Jasmine Mauk walked to put runners on first and second with one out. Later in the inning with two outs, Hall loaded the bases with a bunt single. Next batter,
Faith Edwards drew a walk to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead. GVSU would add to the lead in the fifth inning, scoring two runs to take a 4-1 lead.
Kylee Hoebeke got the inning going by getting hit with a pitch. Goodman followed it with a single to left field to advance Hoebeke to second. Next batter,
Elizabeth Wesoloski launched a double to left center that cleared the bases bringing home Hoebeke and Goodman. Davenport would score one run in the sixth inning to make it 4-2 but
Karli Dorr would shut the Panthers down in order in the seventh inning to secure the two-run win.Â
Camryn Hall batted 2-2 at the plate with an inside the park home run and one walk. Elizabeth Weosloski notched a double with two runs batted in and a walk.
Eliana Eiland and
MaryJane Goodman added a hit, while
Kylee Hoebeke and
Jasmine Mauk scored a run in the win.
Karli Dorr got the start and earned her 12th win of the season after tossing all seven innings allowing two runs off eight hits with four strikeouts.Â
The Lakers advance in the winner's bracket of the double elimination tournament. GVSU will face rival Ferris State tomorrow at 2:30 PM ET, 1:30 PM CT in Crown Point, Indiana at the Crown Point Sportsplex. The game will be streamed live on FloCollege.
