ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Grand Valley State men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up the Big Meet weekend in historic fashion. The men's and women's distance medley relay teams rewrote the school and turf records to begin Saturday's action.
The women's DMR team of
Klaudia O'Malley,
Nicole Sreenan,
Taryn Chapko and
Allie Ludge punched their ticket to nationals after breaking the GVSU (11:23.35; 2012) and Kelly Family Sports Center (11:29.57; 2017) records with a blazing finish of 11:21.12.
Freshmen
Corrina Courser (8.95) and
Madelyn Allman (10.11) finished first and eighth, respectively, in the 60m hurdles. In the 200m,
Marcedes Chandler swept the competition with a 24.96 second finish, with
Angelica Floyd (3
rd; 25.22) and
Ashley Perryman (4
th; 25.35) following her lead.
Rachel Dolan (2
nd; 3.82m) and
Colleen Campbell (3
rd; 3.72m) each hit provisional marks in the pole vault, while
Alessia Olhava,
Lindsey Strutz and
Jenna Doyle cleared 1.59m in the high jump.
Franesha Robinson-Mitchell (1
st; 17.40m) and
Emma Richards (3
rd; 13.57m) led the Lakers from the weight throw and shot put.
The men's team of
Dennis Mbuta,
Jackson Blanchard,
John Groendyk and
Caleb Futter etched their names at the top of the NCAA Division II (9:40.15; 2017), GVSU (9:41.92; 2018) and Kelly Family Sports Center (9:46.51; 2020) record books with a first-place finish of 9:39.38 on a 300m track.
Makiyah Smallwood (8.15m; 60H) and
Jalen Kyles (21.98; 200m) defeated their respective competition, while
Colin DeYoung finished the mile with a runner-up time of 4:09.61, good for a provisional qualification.
Freshman Eli Kosiba turned heads in the high jump pit with a provisional clear of 2.14m, his best of the season. In the weight throw,
Hunter Harding (1
st; 19.48m) and
Leon White (3
rd; 18.53m) led the field with provisional marks.
The Lakers return to action next Friday, Feb. 19 in the GVSU Tune-Up, the last meet before championship season begins on Feb. 27-28 with the GLIAC Championships.
