GVSU Volleyball wins both matches on Saturday; Finish 2-2 in North Carolina

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Grand Valley State volleyball team bounced back on day two in North Carolina with a pair of wins over UNC Pembroke and Coker. The Lakers dropped two matches yesterday at the Queens Fall Classic to Lander and Lenoir Rhyne before traveling to 112 miles southeast to Pembroke to compete in the UNC Pembroke Invitational today. GVSU improves their record to 2-2.
 
The Lakers found themselves down 2-1 vs. UNC Pembroke but came out and dominated the fourth set 25-12. GVSU cruised in the fifth set to win the match, 15-8. In game two vs. Coker, it was all Lakers. GVSU won in straight sets; 25-17, 25-18, 25-21 to get back to the .500 mark.
 
Vs. UNC Pembroke (3-2)
 
GVSU dominated in most statistical categories in the match with UNC Pembroke. The Lakers outscored the Braves in points (84-58), kills (66-43), assists (63-41), and blocks (9-7). Sophomore Ali Thompson had a team-high 18 kills and 17 digs, while redshirt freshman Emma Clines and sophomore Fernanda Spengler recorded 15 and 10 kills respectively. Freshman Rachel Jacquay led with 46 assists.
 
The Lakers trailed in set one 19-15 before winning 10 out of the next 13 points to steal the set from Pembroke. The Braves answered in set two and three with 25-22 wins in each set to take a 2-1 lead. In set four, the score was tied at 8-8 when the Lakers took control of the contest. GVSU won 17 of the next 21 points to cruise to the 25-12 win. The fifth set was all GVSU in a 15-8 score.
 
Vs. Coker (3-0)
 
The Lakers carried their momentum into their second game with the Cobras as they finished the match in straight sets. GVSU recorded 41 kills compared to Coker's 19, while the Laker servers tallied 11 aces. Thompson led the Lakers again with 11 kills and Spengler added 10. Jacquay had a team-high 34 assists, while Thompson and Yerkes recorded 14 and 13 digs respectively.
 
GVSU led the entire first set, stretching their lead by as many as eight points. Coker jumped out to an early 8-7 lead in set two but the Lakers won eight of the next 11 points to take control of the set. The Lakers trailed 11-5 and 17-11 in set three, however a late GVSU surge allowed them to finish the match in set three.
 
The Lakers will be back in action next Friday (Sep. 13) at the NSU Shark Invite in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
