GVSU splits matches against Keiser and Concordia

The Grand Valley State women's tennis team split its two matches on Tuesday (March 5) after they fell to Keiser in the first match, 5-0, before they won their second match over Concordia (Minn.) by a score of 7-0. GVSU now holds a 16-4 record, while Keiser is now 9-1 and Concordia (Minn.) is 2-9.

GVSU's first match of the day was against Keiser at Red Bug Park in Orlando, Fla. The Lakers fought hard but were defeated 5-0.
 
In singles, Vera Griva played from No. 1 singles and fell 6-2, 6-1, while Marija Leko was also defeated in two sets by at the No. 2 position by a final score of 6-2, 6-0. Livia Christman dropped a 6-3, 6-2, decision from No. 4 singles and playing from the No. 5 slot was Nicole Heiniger who was defeated 6-2, 6-0. Keiser added one more point after Liv Hanover fell from the No. 6 singles position 6-2, 6-1.
 
The teams did not play doubles since Keiser had already clinched the match during singles.
 
Grand Valley State vs. Concordia (Minn.)

The Lakers played their second match in the evening against the Cobbers and captured a 7-0 victory, as they swept both singles and doubles play.
 
In doubles, the GVSU scored the first point of the match after they swept Concordia. Playing from No. 1 doubles were the freshmen Griva and Marily Canellopoulos as they won 6-2, while Christman and Leko captured an impressive 6-0 victory from No. 2 doubles. The Lakers completed the sweep after Hanover and Samantha Schrepferman claimed a 6-2 win from the No. 3 spot.
 
The Lakers powered their way through singles as they had four, 6-0, 6-0, matches against the Cobbers from Griva (No. 1 singles), Leko (No. 2 singles), Heiniger (No. 3 singles) and Hanover (No. 5 singles). GVSU also had two more dominant performances from Canellopoulos from the No. 3 slot and Katarina Samardzija from the No. 6 spot. Canellopoulos won 6-1, 6-0, while Samardzija also won 6-1, 6-0.
 
Grand Valley State's next match will be Thursday (March 7) against Concordia (N.Y.) at the USTA campus in Orlando, Fla. with first serve at 3:30 p.m.
