ALLENDALE, Mich. — The No. 13 Grand Valley State lacrosse team takes aim at an outright Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) regular season championship in their regular season finale Friday night at the Davenport Panthers. The Lakers, who have already clinched at least a share of the regular season title for a sixth straight season, would also lock up home field advantage in next week's GLIAC Tournament with a win. GVSU enters the cross-town matchup with a 12-4 overall record and 10-1 mark in league play while the Panthers sit at 3-11 this year and 1-9 in the conference.
The Lakers seem to have hit their stride at the perfect time as they continue to steamroll towards post-season play. GVSU has scored more than 20 goals in each of their last three matches, outscoring their opponents 64-17 across the three victories. GVSU remained third in the Midwest regional voting this week, keeping them in control of their own destiny in their quest for the NCAA Tournament.
Ashley Bailey matched a school record with seven assists in a senior day win last Sunday, giving her 27 assists on the year which, combined with her 37 goals, has her in the team lead with 64 points for the season. Fellow senior
Erika Neumen continues to add to her program record goal totals, adding 47 so far this campaign.
Brianna DeMilia, who has won three GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors this year between the pipes, leads the GLIAC with a 47.9 save percentage.
The large senior class (13 of them) have drawn much of the recognition this season, but some underclassmen have stepped up into prime roles this year. Junior
Carly Shisler has erupted for 42 goals, 53 points, 58 draw controls and 13 caused turnovers. Classmate
Kelley Fitzgerald leads the Lakers with 36 assists, which also ranks second in the GLIAC, to go along with seven goals. Sophomore
Abbi O'Neal has quietly put together another strong year, scoring 30 goals and dishing 16 dimes. Freshman
Sophie Conroy, who has gotten a chance to start late in the year, has come on strong to add seven goals and a pair of assists.
Davenport has struggled in their first year at the Division II level. Ryann Deuel (44 goals, 14 assists) and Taylor Reis (39 goals, 29 assists) have been the two major threats in the Panther attack. Deuel has also posed problems on the draw, controlling 70 of them this season. The Lakers downed Davenport, 18-7, in the first meeting of the year in Allendale. They'll look to sweep the end the regular season with a fourth straight win and continue to build towards their peak just in time for post-season play.
