The Grand Valley State men's cross country team captured its first NCAA National Title after they scored 89 points during the 2018 NCAA Division II Cross Country National Championships 10K race on Saturday (Dec.1) in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Lakers scored 10 more points than Colorado Mines who finished second with 99 points, while Western Colorado (3rd; 117 points), Adams State (4th; 175 points) and Sioux Fall (5th; 214 points) rounded out the top-five.

GVSU had four athletes earn All-Americans honors with
Zach Panning,
Enael Woldemichael,
Tanner Chada and
Josh Steible. Panning, has now captured All-American honors all four years that he has competed, while Woldemichale earned All-American honors for the second consecutive year. Also earning All-American honors for the first time in their careers were
Josh Steible and
Tanner Chada.

Panning, who has led the team this season in every race did it again on Saturday as he finished as the National Runner-Up for the second consecutive year with a time of 31:53.6, while Woldemichael finished sixth after he crossed the finish line at 32:26.4.
Tanner Chada was the next Laker to cross the finish line as he placed 21st with a time of 32:59.9, while
Josh Steible finished 28th with a time of 33:11.8.
Ben Zaremba was the team's fifth score as placed 45th and crossed the finish line at 33:38.6.

Also running for GVSU
Jacob Domagalski, who finished 59th with a time of 33:56.6, and
Brian Masayesva also competed and fininshed with a time of 37:20.6.

Under the guidance of head coach
Jerry Baltes, GVSU became the first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference school to win a cross country national championship and it was also the first championship that the GVSU men's cross country and track & field program has won as well.
