The Grand Valley State women's tennis team (5-0 overall, 5-0 GLIAC) won its fifth consecutive match this season after they claimed a 5-2 road win over Michigan Tech (5-2 overall, 4-2 GLIAC) on Sunday afternoon. The Lakers return home next weekend as they will host Ashland on Saturday (Oct. 13), followed by a Sunday (Oct. 14) match against Wayne State. Â
The Lakers and Huskies started the match in doubles, where GVSU took the doubles point after they won from the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. The duo of
Madison Ballard and
Nicole Heiniger played from the No. 2 pairing and won 6-4, while
Livia Christman and
Liv Hanover claimed a 6-3 win from the No. 3 position. The Huskies did however win from No. 1 doubles, after
Vera Griva and
Marily Canellopoulos dropped a 6-4 decision.
In singles, the Lakers were able to take four out of the six matches. Griva played from the No. 2 position and won 6-0, 6-3, while Christman added another point for the Lakers after she won 6-1, 7-5 from No. 4 singles.
Liv Hanover claimed a 6-4, 6-2 win from the No. 5 spot, followed by another win by Heiniger, as she won 6-3, 6-2, from the No. 6 position.
Michigan Tech was able to score two points during the match from the No. 1 and No. 3 singles position. Ballard, who played from the No. 1 position and won the first set 6-3, then fell in the second set by a score of 7-6( 7-5) and dropped the third set by a score of 6-1. Playing from the No. 3 singles position was
Marija Leko, as she fell in a tough two-set match by a score of 7-5, 7-6(9-7).
Grand Valley State returns home next weekend as they welcome Ashland on Saturday (Oct. 13), followed by a Sunday (Oct. 14) match against Wayne State. Â
