Grand Valley State women's tennis team (1-0 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) defeated Davenport, 9-0, in its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener Saturday afternoon.
"We had some early match girders before the start, but once we got playing they went away and we were able to focus on our opponents," said head coach
John Black. "It was a good way to start conference play and we look to continue that success tomorrow when we play Purdue Northwest."

In singles, junior
Madison Ballard defeated Steph Ritson, 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 1 position. Senior
Aimee Moccia played out of the No. 2 spot and won  6-1, 6-3 defeating Adeline Nelson. Senior
Abby Perkins beat Terin Everse 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 3 position, while freshman
Olivia Hanover played from the No. 4 spot and went 6-0, 6-2 defeating Bridget Barrentt.

The Lakers were awarded two duel singles wins, as Davenport had to forfeit their final two singles matches due to injures.

In doubles play, Aimee and senior
Alexa Sweeney played at the No. 1 pairing, defeating Riton and Nelson 8-3. At the No. 2 pairing, Ballard and junior
Nicole Heiniger defeated Barrett and Everse 8-5. The Lakers were awarded a third victory, as Davenport had to forfeit because of injury.

Grand Valley State travels to Hammond, Ind., for a GLIAC matchup against Purdue Northwest (4-3 overall, 0-3 GLIAC) tomorrow (Oct.1), at 12 p.m.
