The Grand Valley State women's tennis team won the GLIAC Women's Tennis Tournament after defeating Wayne State, 5-3, in the championship match on Sunday afternoon. The Lakers now have their second GLIAC Tournament title in program history and finished the fall season as regular season and tournament champions.

"This weekend we played amazing against some great teams," said head coach John Black. "The entire fall season the whole team has taken turns stepping up to the occasion and winning key matches and I'm extremely proud of them all."

GVSU and WSU started the championship match with doubles play, as the Lakers claimed two out of three matches. Alexa Sweeney and Aimee Moccia won, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles, followed by another point from the No. 2 doubles spot after Madison Ballard and Nicole Heiniger claimed an 8-4 victory. The Warriors won the third doubles match, as Abby Perkins and Livia Christman fell in a tough 9-7 decision from the No. 3 pairing.

The Lakers and Warriors battled back in singles action, as the Warriors claimed the first point. Sweeney fell at No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-4, but GVSU came back at the No. 4 position as Perkins won 7-6 (0), 6-3. Wayne State tallied another point at No. 5 singles, after Olivia Hanover fell in a tough 7-6 (4), 6-1 decision, but Grand Valley State added another point after Heiniger won at the No. 6 spot 6-1, 6-0.

The Lakers clinched the tournament title with Moccia coming from behind and winning in three sets at No. 3 singles. Moccia fell in the first set 3-6, but fought back in the second set and won 6-4. In the third set Moccia played with dominance and won 6-2, to clinch the GLIAC Tournament title for the Lakers.

With the win today, GVSU received an automatic qualifying bid into the 2018 NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament, which takes place in the Spring of 2018.
