The Grand Valley State women's tennis team won on Senior Day en route to its ninth consecutive match with a 7-2 victory over Saginaw Valley State on Saturday. The win now pushes the Lakers to 9-0 overall and in the GLIAC, this season.
Grand Valley State and Saginaw Valley State first battled it out in doubles actions to open the match. The Lakers won the first doubles match as Aimee Moccia and Alexa Sweeney won an 8-1 decision from the No. 1 pairing. GVSU continued to win in doubles as Madison Ballard and Nicole Heiniger won 8-5 at No. 2 doubles, followed by an 8-2 win at the No. 3 doubles by Abby Perkins and Livia Christman.
The Lakers took four of six points in singles action from the Cardinals. The Lakers won their first singles match at the No. 4 position, as Perkins won the match 6-1, 6-1, and Sweeney tallied another point for GVSU from the No. 2 singles and won 6-1, 6-4.
SVSU gained their two points at the No. 3 and No. 1 singles. Moccia battled hard from the No. 3 position, as she fell in the first set 6-3, but came back in the second set winning 6-4, but she was unable to make a comeback and was defeated 10-2 in the third set. Ballard fought hard at No. 1 singles, but was defeated 6-4, 6-4.
GVSU claimed the final two singles points of the contest as Livia Christman cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 victory from the No. 6 position. Olivia Hanover played from the No. 5 singles and tallied the final point for the Lakers, as she won her match 6-4, 6-4.
The Lakers will play their final regular season match against Northwood on Sunday (Oct. 22), at the Premier Athletic Club in Grandville, Mich. at 3:30 p.m. The winner of the match will claim the GLIAC regular season title.
