GVSU Falls To #1 Lewis, 3-0

The Lakers last match at the Crossover will be tomorrow at 2PM against Indianapolis

Box Score Live Stats (Indianapolis)

The Grand Valley State volleyball team fell in a hard fought 3-0 loss to #1 ranked Lewis on Friday night (Oct. 13). The Lakers lost the first set by a 25-22 margin before a close 25-23 defeat in set two. The third set was 25-16 in favor of the Flyers.

GVSU will be back in action tomorrow at 2:00 PM, as they are slated to face off against the Greyhounds of Indianapolis in its final match of the 2017 Midwest Region Crossover. The Lakers will be sporting a 1-1 record heading into the match after taking down Illinois Springfield 3-2 in their opening round matchup. This will be the second matchup between the Lakers and Greyhounds this season, with Indianapolis winning the first round 3-0.

The Flyers led in most of the team categories, as they outpaced the Lakers in kills (43-32), assists (41-32), aces (8-4), and team blocks (10-5). GVSU did lead Lewis in digs (41-40) but hit just .135 compared to the Flyers .262.

Unlike the first match of the day which saw four different Lakers surpass double-digit kills, the leaders in this match were juniors Hannah Murdock and Staci Brower, who both managed seven kills apiece. Murdock sported a .263 hitting percentage – highest of any Laker who took more than five swings – while Brower earned both a solo block and a block assist. Senior Sydney Doby and sophomore Jayci Suseland both tallied six kills in the match. Doby also led the Lakers in blocks with one solo and two assisted.

Setter Frankie Cavallaro led the team in assists, as she helped on 13 kills, while Katie Olson also tallied 11 assists of her own. For the second time in as many matches, sophomore libero Sydney Benchley led the team in digs with 12, while also serving up three aces and a kill.

The first set saw the Lakers carry over their momentum from the win earlier in the day, as they opened up a 10-5 lead early on. A 14-10 Laker lead was erased however, as they Flyers would score six of the next seven points for a 16-15 lead. GVSU fought back to tie the match at 17 and 19 but unfortunately for the Lakers, Lewis would score six of the final eight points for the 25-22 first set victory.

The second set opened up much closer than the first as the teams would be tied at points three and four before GVSU would pull out to a 10-7 lead. After the teams traded points to a 14-11 Laker lead, the Flyers once again wiped it out with a five-point run to take the 15-14 lead themselves. GVSU would close the gap a few points later and the teams would be tied at points 17, 18, 20, 21, and 22. After Lewis broke a 22-22 tie, they score two of the last three for the 25-23 win.

After an early 6-4 lead by the Lakers, it was all Lewis the rest of the third set. The Flyers would score 10-straight points for the 14-6 lead. That deficit would turn out to be too much for GVSU to overcome and they would eventually fall 25-16 to the Flyers.
