ALLENDALE, Mich. – One week following their loss to #3 Lindenwood away from home, #11 Grand Valley State hits the road again for their final two out-of-conference games of the season. Traveling to the East Coast, the Lakers will square off with #19 Bentley on Tuesday in Waltham, Mass at 3 pm.
Â
1-2 after their 11-7 defeat to the Lions on February 28, Grand Valley State was ranked 11th in the country in both the IWLCA coaches' poll and the Nike/
Lacrosse Magazine media poll on Monday (Mar. 7). The Lakers received 215 points in the coaches' poll to stand at #11, placing them ahead of Florida Southern and behind Mercyhurst.
Â
The Lakers enter the game led on offense by
Erika Neumen,
Ryan Skomial and
Meghan Datema. Neumen leads the team with six goals, while Skomial leads with seven points (4 goals, 3 assists), and Datema leads the team in draw controls with 12 and stands second on the team in goals with five. Datema was named GLIAC Offensive Athlete of the Week for her performances against #5 Florida Southern, #1 Adelphi, and #3 Lindenwood. Also looking to make an impact against the Falcons is
Danielle Tunnell. Starting in every game thus far, Tunnell has scored three goals and dished one assist while scooping up three ground balls and causing two turnovers.
Â
In the defensive end of the field, senior
Caitlin Wojichowski leads a defense that averages 11.33 goals allowed. The defender has caused four turnovers through the first three games of the season and will need to be on her best game against a tough Falcon offense. Standing between the pipes will be
Sarah Zwilsky, who was named GLIAC Defensive Athlete of the Week for making 22 saves for a 40.7 save percentage against three Top 5 opponents to start the year.
Â
Bentley enters Tuesday's contest, 0-1 following a 12-9 loss in their season-opener to Dowling on March 2. The Falcons, picked to finish fifth in the Northeast-10 Conference preseason poll, will be lead coming into this game by Kelsey Howard, who scored six goals against the Golden Lions. Hannah Lindgren will also be a player the Lakers must shut down, as the junior attacker recorded five points on two goals and three assists against Dowling. Starting in goal for Bentley will be sophomore Lauren Ochs, who played all 60 minutes in their season-opener and made five saves against 17 shots faced.
Â
The game on Tuesday will be the first time Grand Valley State and Bentley have faced off against each other in the history of either program. Bentley has been a Division II program since 1999, while Grand Valley State began Division II competition in 2012.
Â
The Lakers will have a quick turnaround following their date with the Falcons. On March 12, Grand Valley State travels to Syracuse, New York to take on second-ranked Le Moyne at noon.
