DETROIT, Mich. - The Laker women's tennis team was able to defeat Wayne State in a close 5-4 match on Sunday afternoon. The win pushes the Lakers to 5-1 overall and in GLIAC play.
Singles play would turn out to be the winning factor after Grand Valley was able to win four out of the six matches. The Lakers took one out of the possible three doubles matches as well to escape with the 5-4 victory.
The final singles match would turn out the be the most important of the day as the score was tied at 4-4. Sophomore
Nicole Heiniger was pitted against Astrid Ciellza and the match would turn out to be a good one, as it went to three sets. Heiniger was able to come out on top with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 victory.
Alexa Sweeney in the No. 2 position,
Abby Perkins in the No. 3 position, and
Aimee Moccia in the No. 4 position were able to win their singles matches as well to help the Lakers to victory.
The lone doubles win came as the duo of
Madison Ballard and Sweeney was able to defeat Liv Peisachovitz and Dasha Kuznetsova by a score of 8-5.
The Lakers will be back in action next weekend as they travel to Wisconsin to compete in the Wisconsin-Whitewater Invitational.
