ALLENDALE, Mich. – With yet another undefeated season in the GLIAC, the Grand Valley State women's lacrosse team earned the right to host the GLIAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament for the third year in a row. The top-seeded Lakers will take on fifth-seeded McKendree in Friday's (May 1) semifinal game at 7 p.m.
In their only regular season meeting this season, GVSU thumped McKendree 19-2 at GVSU Lacrosse/Track & Field Stadium.
Erika Neumen tallied five goals and one assist while
Ryan Skomial netted two and dished out three assists in the win.
Caitlin Wojichowski led the team with six ground balls and tied for the lead with
Alyssa Neumen with two caused turnovers.
The Lakers handled Findlay 24-7 in he 2014 semifinal before taking down Tiffin 10-6 in the championship game to sweep the GLIAC regular season and Tournament titles.
Grand Valley State enters this year's tournament riding a 10-game winning streak and have allowed a little over seven goals per game over the course of the season. They are led on offense by sophomore midfielder
Erika Neumen, who ranks second in the GLIAC with 67 goals and 80 points. Neumen also stands third on the team with 48 draw controls and is seventh in ground balls with 22.
Ryan Skomial and
Sarah Lowe are also key cogs in the Laker offense. Skomial ranks second on the team with 47 points and third with 26 assists, while Lowe leads the team with 29 assists and is third in points with 37.
Brooke Ingraham is also a vital part of the team, netting 25 goals to stand second on the team while her 11 assists gives her 36 points for the year.
The GVSU defense is led by
Alyssa Neumen and
Caitlin Wojichowski. The senior Neumen leads the team with 21 caused turnovers and is fourth on the team with 26 ground balls, while the junior Wojichowski ranks second in caused turnovers with 20 and is tied for second on the team with 28 ground balls. In between the pipes will be sophomore
Sarah Zwilsky. Zwilsky has played every minute of every game from Grand Valley State, racking up 114 saves and a 48.3 save percentage while holding a GLIAC-leading goals-against-average of 7.18.
The winner of the GVSU-McKendree game will face the winner of Friday's first semifinal between second-seeded Tiffin and third-seeded Findlay, which is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start. Sunday's (May 3) championship game will begin at 1 p.m. at GVSU Laker Lacrosse/Track & Field Stadium.
