Live Stats Allendale, Mich. - With the regular season coming to a close, the Grand Valley State women's lacrosse team hosts their final two home games of the season when they welcome GLIAC rivals Findlay on Friday (Apr. 17) and Tiffin on Sunday (Apr. 19).
Grand Valley State (10-4, 4-0 GLIAC), coming off a 19-8 upset over 12th-ranked Regis this past Monday, currently sit at the top of the GLIAC standings with this week's opponents breathing down their necks. Tiffin, also holding a 4-0 conference record, sits second behind them because of an overall record of 8-6, while Findlay holds a 3-1 record against GLIAC opponents along with a 5-6 overall mark.
During their seven-game winning streak, GVSU has been as impressive on offense as they have been on defense. The team has been averaging 17.71 goals per game during the winning streak, while limiting opponents to just 3.28 goals per game on the defensive end. Against GLIAC opponents, Grand Valley State has scored 68 goals while only allowing four, giving them the best goals for to goals against ratio in the conference.
Leading the way for the Lakers on offense all season has been their duo of sophomore midfielders,
Erika Neumen and
Ryan Skomial. Neumen has found the back of the net 56 times in her first year as a Laker, tying the record for goals in a season. She also stands second on the list for points in a season with 65, only eight points shy of tying the top mark of 73. Both her goal and point totals lead the GLIAC, while she ranks tied for second in goals in Division II and is tied for 14th in points.
As for Skomial, she has led the team in assists from the first game of the season. Her 23 assists place her second in the conference, and she's tied for 11th in points with 38 after adding in her 15 goals on the year. Skomial has also pulled down 40 draw controls, putting her just one off the team lead.
The leader in that category has been
Carolyn Kraus, who has pulled down 41 draw controls through 14 games this season. Kraus also ranks second on the team in ground balls with 24, and she has added 10 goals and two assists on the year.
Kelly Leibovitz, who scored her first goal of the season against McKendree this past Sunday (Apr. 12), leads the team with 27 ground balls while tying for fourth with
Zoe Stiemann in caused turnovers with 10.
Defensively, Grand Valley State has been on lockdown since their 14-5 loss to #3 Lindenwood on March 24, not having allowed an opponent to score in double digits ever since and holding teams to under two goals four times, including a 17-0 shutout over Alderson-Broaddus.Senior captain and two-time GLIAC Defender of the Year
Alyssa Neumen leads the team with 18 caused turnovers, while junior
Caitlin Wojichowski follows close behind with 16. In net,
Sarah Zwilsky has had a solid sophomore season, holding a goals against average of 7.29 along with a 48.0 save percentage and 94 saves as she's played all 840 minutes between the pipes in 2015. Zwilsky, who earned GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week for her performance against Ursuline and McKendree, has four games with double-digit saves, including a personal-best 14 against #12 Regis.
Findlay enters Friday's game with the fourth-best scoring offense in the conference, scoring 147 goals and averaging 13.36 per game, along with the fifth-highest shooting offense (48.4). Their defense, however, has been a weak point throughout the year, giving up 160 goals through 11 games and allowing 14.55 goals per game. The Oilers will be led on offense by Kyra Bradley and Sarah Lankton. Bradley leads the team and is third in the conference in goals with 44 and is fourth in the conference in points with 52. Lankton, the 2013 GLIAC Freshman of the Year, leads the team with 10 assists and ties for 11th in the GLIAC. Findlay will most likely turn to Rachel Heath in net. The freshman netminder has a record of 5-5 with 58 saves and a save percentage of 33.7.
After dropping six straight games to start the year, Tiffin have won eight straight and are once again challenging the Lakers for the top spot in the conference. The Dragons lead the GLIAC with 200 goals scored on the year while giving up 142 in 2015. Tiffin is led on offense by Emily Roussel and Gina Abulone, with Roussel leading in scoring (48) and points (58) and Abulone leading with 38 assists and sitting third in the conference in points (53). In net, Tiffin will turn to two-time GLIAC Goalie of the Year Jessica Bombard to try to stop the red-hit Lakers. Bombard leads the conference with a 54.5 save percentage, and she ranks third all-time in saves and is first among active players.
