ResultsMIDLAND, Mich. – The top-seeded Grand Valley State women's tennis kicked off the 2015 GLIAC Tournament in dominating fashion with a 5-0 shutout over eighth-seeded Walsh at the Greater Midland Tennis Center on Friday.

The top-seeded Lakers, who won a share of the GLIAC regular season title with an 11-1 overall record and 10-1 conference record, are looking for their first conference tournament title since 2010. The Lakers split the title with Northwood, who also finished the year with a 10-1 conference mark, but the Lakers received the top seed in the Tournament due to a 6-3 win over the Timberwolves in September.

Grand Valley State jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead by winning all three doubles matches in convincing fashion.

Rachel Sumner won the No. 1 match 8-6 over Sofya Logunova/Daria Bondareva,

Madison Ballard won 8-2 in match No. 2 over Asia Harris/Arina Kravitz, and
Abby Perkins/
Livia Christman cruised to an 8-1 win over Alice Bergamaschi/Snezhana Kiseleva in match No. 3.

Needing just five points to win the match, GVSU picked up the two wins from a pair of sophomores. Moccia defeated Harris (6-0, 6-1) in the No. 3 match, and Sumner won over Gabriela Laguna-Leon (6-1, 7-5) to win match No. 5 and clinch the match. Regardless of the score in the match, all remaining matches went unfinished.

The Lakers will compete in the semifinal match on Saturday (Oct. 22) against fourth-seeded Tiffin at 3:45 pm. The teams faced off during the regular season in Allendale, with GVSU coming out on top 6-3 in the October 3 match. The Dragons won their opening match 5-2 over fourth-seeded Ferris State.
