Box ScoreALLENDALE, Mich. – In their 2014 season opener, the Grand Valley State women's tennis team took care of GLIAC foe Michigan Tech, 7-2, at the GVSU Tennis Courts.
The Lakers, who lost very little as they return six players from last year's squad while bringing five freshman into the fold, look to do even better than their 20-8 record last season and 12-5 mark in the GLIAC, and today's win is a good start.
GVSU stumbled out of the gate in the #1 singles, with senior
Leah Dancz dropping her first match of the season (6-2, 6-3) in the first match of the day, but fellow senior and #2 singles player
Kali Phillips picked up the first win of the day for the Lakers (7-6, 6-1). Phillips needed to go into extra time to pick up the first-set win, but she then blew away her opponent in the next set to pick up the W and point for the team.
In the #3 spot, senior
Carola Orna won another point for the Lakers in her match (6-1, 6-2), while freshman
Alexa Sweeney won her first collegiate match (6-0, 6-2) in the #4 spot. Freshman
Abby Perkins and senior
Kelly Trapp won both of their matches 6-0, 6-0 in the #5 and #6 spots, respectively.
In doubles action, the duo of Dancz and Phillips were bested 8-5 by the #1 doubles team for Michigan Tech. Orna and Sweeney teamed up to win 8-2 in the #2 match, while freshman
Aimee Moccia and senior
Morgan Patterson together won a clean 8-0 match against their opponent in the #3 doubles draw.
Grand Valley State finishes their weekend home-stand on Sunday, Sept. 7, when they host Lake Superior State at 10 am. at the GVSU Tennis Courts.
