Â
After a strong 3-1 victory over #14 Ferris State on Tuesday night, #18 Grand Valley State has a quick turnaround before getting back on the court. The Lakers will head to Ohio to take on a pair of GLIAC South Division opponents - Ohio Dominican and Tiffin - this weekend (Sept. 26-27).
Â
The win over rival Ferris State was the fifth straight victory for GVSU, as the Lakers are now 7-2 overall and a perfect 5-0 in GLIAC play. On Friday, Grand Valley State will face surprising Ohio Dominican (6-5, 4-1 GLIAC) at 7:00 p.m. and finish out the weekend against Tiffin (4-4, 2-3 GLIAC) on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
Â
Ohio Dominican, after losing four of its first five matches, has rebounded to win five of its last six contests. Included in that recent stretch was a four-match win streak, featuring conference wins over Malone, Walsh, and on the road at Wayne State. ODU's lone setback in league action was a four-set defeat at Saginaw Valley State. Grand Valley State, 2-0 in true road matches, will aim to be the first team to defeat Ohio Dominican (4-0 at home) in Columbus.
Â
Tiffin is trending the opposite way of Ohio Dominican. The Dragons lost their first match of the year before running off four consecutive victories. Two of those wins came over Alaska Fairbanks, while TU also knocked off Walsh and Malone at home. Since that point, however, Tiffin has lost three straight contests - at Saginaw Valley State, at Wayne State, and at Ohio Dominican. The Dragons are also unbeaten on their home floor, with a 2-0 record.
Â
GVSU will look to build on the momentum it received from the four-set win over its West Michigan rival on Tuesday night. Ferris State narrowly took the first set, 25-23, before the Lakers answered by winning the final three sets, 25-17, 25-17, and 25-22. In the last three stanzas, the Grand Valley State defense did not allow FSU to hit better than .070 in any of the sets. Overall, Ferris State hit just .097, while GVSU connected at a .216 mark.
Â
Five Lakers recorded double-digit digs, while four GVSU players tallied at least 10 kills. Senior Kaitlyn Wolters' performance was especially noteworthy, as the All-American setter collected 34 assists, 12 digs, and 11 kills (without an error) for a .478 attack mark. It is the first triple-double by a Laker since the 2007 season. Junior Betsy Ronda (15 digs, 11 kills) notched a double-double, while seniors Abby Aiken (19 digs), Christina Canepa (19 digs), and Kourtney Wolters (16 digs) were stout defensively.
Â
Looking ahead, GVSU will be back at home next weekend (Oct. 3-4) when the team welcomes Lake Erie and Ashland into the Fieldhouse Arena.Â
