ResultsMIDLAND, Mich. - With the conference crown and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on the line, the Grand Valley State women's tennis team came up just short against Wayne State, falling 5-4 in the championship round of the 2014 GLIAC Women's Tennis Tournament. The loss put the Lakers' record at 12-3 on the year, while the Warriors improved to 15-0 with the victory.
In doubles action, wins from the #2 pairing

Alexa Sweeney (8-4) and and #3
Aimee Moccia/
Morgan Patterson (8-6) put third-seeded GVSU up 2-1 on top-seeded Wayne State.
In the singles side of the match, Grand Valley State went up 4-1 with wins by
Carola Orna (6-0, 6-1) in the #3 spot and
Kelly Trapp (6-1, 6-3) in the #6 spot, but Wayne State took the #1, #2, and #5 singles seeds to even the score at 4-4. With the conference crown hanging in the balance, it came down to
Alexa Sweeney in the #4 spot to give the Lakers their first GLIAC title since 2010. The freshman played hard, but fell in the tiebreaker set (3-6, 6-2, 6-4).
In addition, the 2014 All-GLIAC Women's Tennis Teams were announced, and a total of four Lakers earned spots on the teams.
Leah Dancz was named to the First Team, while
Carola Orna and
Kali Phillips made the Second Team, and
Alexa Sweeney was named to the Honorable Mention Team.
