The Lakers are coming off their first homestand of the season, dropping both games at the hands of top-10 opponents Maryville and UIndy. They fell to Maryville by the score of 10-5, then to UIndy 11-8. Despite those losses, the Lakers are still 5-3 to begin the season and ranked 17th in the most recent IWLCA poll. The Lakers swept GLIAC Players of the Week honors, with Kendra Swope earning offensive honors and Sarah Krause getting the defensive nod. Swope scored four goals, adding six groundballs and three caused turnovers over the two games. Krause recorded 13 saves in 60 minutes of action, surpassing 100 saves in her career.

The Lakers have been dominant in the GLIAC over the past few seasons, sweeping four straight regular season and tournament titles. They also have won 35 consecutive GLIAC regular season matchups, the longest streak in conference history. They were picked first in the league's preseason poll, followed by Northern Michigan, CSP, Davenport, and SVSU.

Friday's game against Concordia-St. Paul will be the GLIAC opener for GVSU, but the third league game for the Golden Bears. They defeated SVSU 18-3 to move to 5-4 overall and 1-0 in the conference. Susie Monson leads CSP in scoring with 31 points on 16 goals and a GLIAC-high 15 assists. Anna Fisher and Sara Kaiser both have over 20 points as well for the Golden Bears, who have the most goals in the league (107). Three goalkeepers have split time in the cage, combining for a .403 save percentage and 71 saves. The Golden Bears and the Lakers have met 12 times in their history, with GVSU winning all 12 meetings.

After a 1-1 record last week, falling to UIndy and winning their GLIAC opener over SVSU, Northern Michigan enters the weekend 6-3. The Wildcats have the league's leading goal scorer in sophomore Josie Lakosky, who has 32 goals and 15 assists for a conference leading 47 points. Hannah Jacobs and Abby Sisson both have over 20 points for NMU, who average a GLIAC leading 14.78 goals per game. Zoe Montgomery has gotten a majority of playing time in net for the Wildcats, posting 50 saves on a .495 save percentage.
