Lakers Set To Take On SVSU And LSSU

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The Grand Valley State women's volleyball team heads out on the road for their penultimate weekend of the regular season. The Lakers head to Saginaw Valley State on Friday, then head across the bridge to take on Lake Superior State Saturday afternoon.

Last weekend, the Lakers completing their final homestand in style, sweeping Davenport, then defeating #15 Ferris State in five sets. Making her first two collegiate starts, freshman setter Gabby Orlet put up a monster weekend, earning GLIAC Setter of the Week honors. She posted 74 assists, 22 digs, six kills, six blocks, and two service aces, including a career-high 45 against the Bulldogs. It was a balanced offensive attack, with Meghan O'Sullivan posting 24 kills, Kennedy Arp recording 21, and Kendall Stover notching 19. Also making her first two starts, were libero Lexi Armstrong, who had two games with double-digit digs. The two wins move them to 15-7 on the season, sitting in a tie for second in the league at 9-3. They were receiving votes in this week's AVCA poll and were one of 10 teams under consideration for the Midwest Regional in the first NCAA release of the fall.
 
Earlier this season, GVSU swept both LSSU and SVSU in the opening weekend of conference play. All three games against LSSU were 25-13, with Grand Valley hitting .405 compared to the .011 from Lake State. Four players had five or more kills, led by Brianna Stawski's 11. The following day, the Lakers defeated SVSU on Senior Day, winning all three sets by at least six points. Meghan O'Sullivan had a team-high nine kills, with three others totaling eight. Across the two games GVSU served 15 aces and totaled 11 blocks.
 
Beginning the weekend is a matchup with Saginaw Valley State, who ninth in the conference standings. The Cardinals are 8-16 overall, but only 2-10 in the GLIAC. Rachel Townsend ranks fifth in the GLIAC in both kills per set (3.34) and points per set (3.82), while sophomore setter Jackie Scheiber has 740 assists, also good for fifth in the league. The Lakers have won five straight in the Battle of the Valleys, dating back to 2021.
 
The 2025 season has been a struggle for Lake Superior State. They entire the second to last weekend of league play at 1-18 overall and 1-11 in conference play, only defeating Roosevelt in late October. GVSU has defeated LSSU in 61 consecutive matchups, dating back to 1989, only losing 11 sets in that timeframe.
