Volleyball Readies For GLIAC Semifinals

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The Grand Valley State women's volleyball team heads up 131 to Big Rapids for the GLIAC semifinals on Saturday. The fourth-seeded Lakers will take on the top seed and host Ferris State at 4:00 tomorrow afternoon.

Grand Valley State advanced to Saturday with a sweep over Davenport Wednesday night. After a close 26-24 set one win, the Lakers cruised in the next two, winning 25-13 and 25-16. Kendall Stover totaled 11 kills and 13 digs in the win, adding two blocks. Kennedy Arp hit .500, posting 10 kills and five total blocks. Brianna Stawski had nine kills and six blocks, with Grace Busold recording 15 digs. Gabby Orlet dished out 32 assists. Stover, Arp, Stawski, Meghan O'Sullivan, and Kate Goudreau were named All-GLIAC selections earlier today.
 
Both matches this season between the Lakers and Bulldogs went the full five sets, with GVSU coming away victorious in both. In the first match in Big Rapids, the Lakers took the first two sets, before Ferris State won the third and fourth, forcing a fifth, which GVSU took 17-15. The second meeting saw Ferris win set won, followed by two Laker wins, but a fourth set Bulldog victory forced another fifth set. In that fifth set, the Lakers never trailed, winning 15-11. Across the two games, O'Sullivan posted 30 kills and 17 digs, swinging at a .365 clip. Arp had 17 kills and eight blocks, while Stawski recorded 19 kills and eight total blocks.
 
Ferris State got through the opening round with a 3-1 victory over Purdue Northwest. The Bulldogs claimed a share of the GLIAC regular season crown and enter the semifinals at 23-6. Five Bulldogs earned All-GLIAC honors, with Emily May, Hayley Wegener, and Gabby Piazza all garnering First-Team honors. Logyn Geren was named to the second team and Hope Davies was an Honorable Mention selection. FSU was ranked third in the most recent NCAA Midwest Regional rankings and 18th in the AVCA national poll.
