ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Grand Valley State Lakers hosted their first home meet of the regular season against Northern Michigan, where pool records were broken on both the men's and women's sides — including in both swimming and diving events.
On the men's side, the Lakers defeated Northern Michigan 178-63.
The men's 400 medley relay took first and second place. The first-place team of Jan Matejczuk, Andrew Goh, Thomas Ferguson, and Mahmoud Abdelkarim touched the wall at 3:17.64. The second relay team of Anton Rauch, Jason Yeou, Ali Usama, and Carsyn Christoffel finished in 3:21.46.
Raul Briceno won the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 9:18.99, while freshman Berk Boz placed third in 9:29.08. Thomas Ferguson took first in the 200 free with a time of 1:39.42, and Mason Crews finished third.
Evan Scotto DiVetta broke the pool record in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.00 seconds, earning first place. Carsyn Christoffel finished second in 20.73. Jan Matejczuk and Matti Gaebler took second and third in the 200 individual medley with times of 1:49.50 and 1:51.67, respectively. Ferguson finished second in the 200 butterfly (1:51.42).
Scotto DiVetta added another win for the Lakers in the 100 freestyle (44.34). Anton Rauch placed first in the 200 backstroke (1:49.68), while freshman Tyler Cameron was second (1:54.94). Briceno earned another first-place finish in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:33.96.
The men's 200 free relay team set a new pool record with a winning time of 1:20.34. Relay members were Ali Usama, Mahmoud Abdelkarim, Carsyn Christoffel, and Evan Scotto DiVetta.
Carter Wood set a pool record on the one-meter dive with a score of 346.13. Max Schwickert placed third (270.98) on the one-meter, then won the three-meter with a score of 274.35. Austin Clise took second.
On the women's side, the Lakers topped the Wildcats 138-104.
The women's 400 medley relay team of Vittoria Proietti, Liv Geiger, Kelly Shortall, and Lucy Hedley won with a time of 3:48.62.
Proietti dominated the 1,000 free with a first-place time of 10:14.23, while Yunona Freese placed fourth. Lucy Hedley won the 200 freestyle (1:53.72), and Katie O'Connell took third (1:57.66).
Samara Zeinert earned first in the 50 free (24.43), with Ana Villamil placing third. Elliott McAlpine took second in the 200 IM (2:07.21). Kelly Shortall won the 200 butterfly (2:07.32), while Freese was third (2:12.05). Hedley added another win in the 100 free (52.66).
Proietti claimed another first-place finish in the 200 backstroke (2:02.98). Elliott McAlpine broke the pool record in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:17.45.
The women's 200 free relay team finished second (1:37.67). Relay members were Samara Zeinert, Angelica Angilletta, Madeline Basa, and Ana Villamil.
Emi Goto placed second in the three-meter dive (249.08), and Olivia Kutsche was third (245.78). Macy Polasek finished second in the one-meter (253.35), while Goto took third (251.25).
The Lakers return to action Saturday, Nov. 1, when they host Indianapolis at the GVSU Pool. The meet begins at 1 p.m.
